Spanish historian, anthropologist, and scholar. 2nd Count of Beretta.
Son of the historians and scholars Antonio Ballesteros Beretta and Mercedes Gaibrois Riaño. Brother of the author Mercedes Ballesteros Gaibrois.
He studied baccalaureate at the Cardenal Cisneros High School in Madrid, and he matriculated at the Faculty of Philosophy and Arts of the Central University of Madrid, where he graduated and obtained his PhD in History. He was linked to the Instituto-Escuela as a teacher and collaborated at the Catálogo Monumental de España with Manuel Gómez Moreno. In 1931 he took a competitive exam for the Corps of Archivists. The following year he received a scholarship from the Committee for the Promotion of Studies and Scientific Research, which allowed him to obtain his PhD in Anthropology at the Kaiser Wilhelm University of Berlin. When he returned, he rejoined the Centre of Historical Studies. During the Spanish Civil War, he was mobilised to the front, later, he was transferred to the Service of Artistic Recovery in Castelón y Cataluña. After the war, he joined the Institute of History of America of CSIC. Between 1940 and 1950 he was a professor at the University of Valencia; he obtained a position at the Central University of Madrid where he boosted the Seminar of American Studies. Between 1960 and 1963 he was civil governor of Tenerife ad founded the Institute of Colombian Studies of La Gomera. He returned to the university until his retirement. It is noteworthy his participation in the creation of the School of Anthropologic Studies with Carmelo Lisón, Claudio Esteva, José Alcina, and Manuel Alvar.
