Spanish art historian, primary school teacher, university professor, archivist, and politician. 5th Baron of San Calixto.
He was born in Granada in 1895. He earned a degree in Philosophy and Letters, in the History section, from the Universidad de Granada and the Universidad de Sevilla. He obtained his doctorate in Philosophy and Letters from the Central University of Madrid with his thesis Granada en la Guerra de la Independencia.
In 1915, he joined the Cuerpo Facultativo de Archiveros, Bibliotecarios y Arqueólogos through a public examination and was assigned to the Archive of the Delegación de Hacienda in Granada (1915-1920). He later moved to the Museo Arqueológico of the same city (1920-1951). In 1925, he won the public examination for the professorship of Theory of Literature and the Arts at the Universidad de Salamanca and later at the Universidad de Granada, where he became dean in 1935. He was a disciple of Manuel Gómez-Moreno Martínez and collaborated with Leopoldo Torres Balbás and Emilio García Gómez in founding the Escuela de Estudios Árabes at the Casa del Chapiz in Granada.
Between 1940 and 1941, he served as Gobernador Civil of Granada and later as mayor of the city. In 1951, he was appointed Director General de Bellas Artes at the Ministerio de Educación Nacional under Minister Joaquín Ruiz-Giménez. He became a member of the Real Academia de Bellas Artes de San Fernando in 1956. He was awarded the Orden de Isabel la Católica and the Orden de Alfonso X el Sabio and was a member of the Hispanic Society of America. He passed away in Madrid in 1961 and is buried in Granada.
