History:

Spanish archivist, librarian, high school teacher, and journalist.

Born in Albacete in 1897, he was the son of Francisco Tolsada Gómez and nephew of Manuel Tolsada Gómez, who was also an archivist-librarian.

After his family moved to Ciudad Real, he completed his high school studies at the Instituto General y Técnico and the Academia General de Enseñanza de Ciudad Real. After graduating, he obtained his Ph.D. in Philosophy and Letters at the Universidad Central de Madrid in 1919.

He joined the Corps of Specialist Archivists, Librarians and Archaeologists through public examination in 1921 and was assigned to Huelva, where he took charge of the Archivo de Hacienda and the Biblioteca Provincial.

After the death of his uncle Manuel Tolsada, archivist and librarian of Ciudad Real, he moved in 1922 to direct the Archivo de Hacienda, the Archivo Municipal, and the Biblioteca Provincial , a position he held until 1936. In 1931, he ceased to carry out municipal archivist duties. During this period he was in charge of moving the Library's headquarters to the palace of the Diputación Provincial in 1929.

He was granted a scholarship by the Provincial Deputation of Ciudad Real in 1927 and continued his studies in philology at the University of the Sorbonne in Paris. He was also a high school teacher at the Academia General de Enseñanza and the Instituto Juan de Ávila, being dismissed from the latter post in 1936.

He was purged by the Second Spanish Republic government in 1936 from his teaching job. Later, he was transferred and assigned as an interim at the Archive of the Crown of Aragon ACA in May 1937 and was separated from service by the end of the year, losing his rights.

He spent the entire Spanish Civil War hiding in Ciudad Real with relatives. After the war, he was reinstated in active service in 1939 as director of the Biblioteca Universitaria de Barcelona, and he also returned to his position as a high school teacher. Between 1939 and 1943, he was a professor at the Escuela de Bibliotecarias in Barcelona, obtaining the professorship of History of the Book and Library Techniques.

He was transferred to Madrid in 1943, where he worked first at the Biblioteca Universitaria and later at the Depósito de libros and the Junta de Intercambio, between 1944 and 1952.

He worked in both the Servicio Nacional Coordinador de Bibliotecas and the Centro Coordinador de Bibliotecas in Madrid, allowing him to participate in the creation and reorganization of hundreds of libraries across central and southern Spain, including those in Africa, as far as Equatorial Guinea. He compiled the Inventario de los Archivos de la provincia de Ciudad Real and was the commissioner for exhibitions organized by the INLE.

As a journalist, he contributed to publications in Ciudad Real, Madrid, and Barcelona between 1918 and 1944. He was a founding member of the Instituto de Estudios Manchegos. He was awarded the Civil Order of Alfonso X the Wise. He passed away in Albacete in 1958 at the age of 60.
