Philip V was King of Spain, Naples, Sicily and Sardinia, Duke of Milan, and sovereign of the Netherlands. He was born in the Palace of Versailles (France) on 19 December 1683 and died in Madrid on 9 July 1746.
He was King of Spain from November 16, 1700 until his death, with a brief interruption (between January 16 and September 5, 1724) due to the abdication of his son Louis I, who died prematurely on August 31, 1724.
He was the successor of the last monarch of the Habsburg Spain, his great-uncle Charles II, so he became the first king of the House of Bourbon in Spain. He was son of Louis, Grand Dauphin of France and Maria Anna Victoria of Bavaria.
He married twice: Firstly his cousin, Maria Luisa of Savoy (September 17, 1688 - February 14, 1714) on November 2, 1701; they had four children, but only two survived: Louis I (August 25, 1707 - August 31, 1724) and Ferdinand VI (September 23, 1713 - August 10, 1759). Secondly, he married Elisabeth Farnese (October 25, 1692 - July 11, 1766) on December 24, 1714, with whom he had seven children; only six reached adulthood: Charles III (20 January 1716 - 14 December 1788); Maria Ana Victoria (31 March 1718 - 15 January 1781); Philip I of Parma (15 March 1720 - 18 July 1765); Maria Teresa Rafaela (11 June 1726 - 22 July 1746); Luis Antonio Jaime (25 July 1727 - 7 August 1785), and Maria Antonieta Fernanda (17 November 1729 - 19 September 1785).
