Content and Structure

Scope and Content:

After the success of Spansk sommer (Spanish Summer) in which he reflected his experiences at the International Congress of Writers in Defense of Culture and his visits to the fronts of the Battle of Brunete, the Norwegian writer and activist Nordhal Grieg visited, again , Spain in the winter of 1938 to gather more material for a second book about the anti-fascist war. According to the testimony of the Norwegian journalist Lise Lindbæk, both went to Teruel from Madrid where one of the toughest battles of the war was being fought, interviewing Scandinavian internationals for Dagbladet.

.

Grieg returned to Madrid in February, coinciding during those days with the Belgian socialist leader Vandervelde, who had attended as a guest at the session of the Republican Cortes in Montserrat a few days earlier, the delegation of French Communist deputies, headed by Arthur Ramette, and a delegation of the Glasgow Trade Union Council. The photograph was published on the last page of the Madrid-based weekly Mundo Gráfico (February 16, 1938).

On his return he published, in 1938, what some consider his best novel Ung må verden ennu være ("The world must still be young"), which shows his political passion and sincere identification with the Russians. The novel is set in England, Russia, Spain and Norway from their rich personal experiences.
