José María de la Peña y Cámara was a Spanish archivist.
He graduated in Philosophy and Literature, History specialization, from the Central University of Madrid. In 1922 he joined the Corps of Archivists, Librarians, and Archaeologists. He held the position of General Archivist of Simancas between 1922 and 1925. He got a PhD in Law from the Central University of Madrid in 1936 with the thesis: "Licenciado Juan de Ovando, Visitador y Presidente del Consejo de Indias".
Because of his remarkable interest in American studies, he requested and obtained the transfer by public tender to the Archivo General de Indias (General Archive of the Indies) in Seville, where he was Secretary, Deputy Director, and Director since 1952. That same year he founded the Ibero-American Archival Courses. He was its director and teacher between 1961 and 1964.
Among his publications, "Guia del Archivo de Indias" (1957) should be highlighted.
In 1965 he was appointed Inspector‑General of the Archives Corps. He was appointed vice‑president of the UNESCO International Technical Committee for the Guide to Sources of Latin American History in the European Archives (1959-1964). He went to Washington, representing Spain, and to the Archivo de Indias, presenting a Report on this institution at the Inter‑American Meeting of Archives (1961).
In 1967, near to his retirement, he requested a scholarship to investigate the archives of the Monastery of Guadalupe in Cáceres, where he carried out the cataloging process of its funds.
