Spanish writer and intellectual, member of the Generation of ’27. He was the last alive witness of the friends at the Students Housing in Madrid, among who were lots of members of the Generation of ’27 such as Lorca, Dalí, Alberti y Buñuel, of whom he was a close friend.
Son of the engineer Severino Bello, friend of Francisco Giner de los Ríos and Joaquín Costa. The family moved to Madrid when his father was named responsible of the Canal de Isabel II. The friendship between Costa and his father favored the joining of the Students Housing of the three brothers Bello (Manuel, Severino y José). José was 11 years old back then. Later, he studied medicine.
Between 1927 and 1936 he lived in Seville and it was there where he became the friend of the bullfighter Ignacio Sánchez Mejías. He organized there, at the Athenaeum of Seville the tribute to Góngora.
During the Civil War he stayed in Madrid and, after it, he dedicated himself to private activities.
