Exiled Spaniard. Daughter of the professor and oceanographer Rafael de Buen and Francisca López de Heredia. Granddaughter of Odón de Buen y del Cos, professor of the Faculty of Science in Barcelona until 1911 and founder of the Spanish Institute of Oceanography. She was also the granddaughter of the wine-producer from la Rioja Rafael López de Heredia. She was married to Joan Jordana.
During the Spanish Civil War, Rafaela was sent to Barcelona. She joined the Unión de Muchachas in 1938 in order to help the wounded, specially those of the International Brigades. She worked in the Ministry of Defense. She was a militant of the Unified Socialist Party. Once Barcelona was under the control of the National party, she went to France. She arrived as an exile in Chile aboard the Formosa in December 1939, all the way from Le Havre. In Chile, she worked for a while at the University of Chile in the Commission of Intellectual Cooperation. She was the author of the books "Días cálidos y azules" and "Teselas for a mosaic".
