It is a historic Masonic organization set up in 1889, whose former Grand Master was Miguel Morayata Sagrario. It stemmed from the merger of the "Gran Oriente de España" and the "Gran Oriente Nacional de España". "Gran Oriente Español" (GOE) merged with the "Grand Logia Regional Simbólica Catalana Balear" in 1914 and assumed the name of the former. GOE was split into six Regional Grand Lodges: the Regional Grand Lodge - Central Division, which was based in Madrid and spread its influence across Valladolid, Guadalajara, Bilbao, Irún, Vitoria, Cuenca and Segovia; the Grand Lodge of Northwest, which was based in Gijón and comprised the provinces of Oviedo, León, Lugo, A Coruña, Ourense, Pontevedra and Santander; the Grand Lodge of Valencia and Murcia, which was operative in Alicante and Valencia; the Grand Lodge of the South, which was based in Seville and comprised the provinces of Jaén, Cádiz, Córdoba, Almería, Huelva, Málaga, Granada and Badajoz; the Grand Lodge of Southeast with jurisdiction in Cartagena and Albacete; the Grand Lodge of Northeast, which comprised Barcelona and Lleida. On top of the peninsular lodges, the so-called Lodges of the Sea or Floating Lodges are also worthy of note. Some of the most important Grand Masters were Agustín Barcia Trelles, Demófilo de Buen, Diego Martínez Barrio, Ángel Rizo Bayona and Lucio Martínez Gil. Because during the civil war the Freemasonry was rendered illegal by the rebels and the masons were subsequently prosecuted by the Francoist dictatorship, GEO first relocated to France (between February and July 1939) and then to Mexico. In Mexico, GEO gave assistance to mason brothers and built relationships with other masonic societies. Lucio Martínez Gil, Grand Master of GEO since 1938, preserved his position until 1955. With the advent of the democracy, the Ministry of the Interior registered the GEO as an association in 1979. In 2001, GOE decided to join the Grand Lodge of Spain.
