History:

Claudio Sánchez Albornoz was a Spanish historian, archivist, and politician. He is considered one of the most remarkable Spanish historians. He graduated in Philosophy and Letters and got a PhD from the University of Madrid. He was son of Nicolás Sánchez Albornoz y Hurtado (1862‑1941) and Teresa Menduiña Jové, and father of Nicolás, Mari‑Cruz, and Concha Sánchez‑Albornoz Aboín. He was number one in the public examination to the Corps of Archives, Libraries, and Museums, and tenured Professor of Spain's History, in the universities of Barcelona, ​​Valencia, Valladolid and Madrid. In 1926 he joined the Royal Academy of History and was Rector of the Central University in 1932‑34. He also was deputy for Avila between 1931 and 1936, Minister of State in 1933, Vice‑President of the Cortes in 1936, Counselor of Public Instruction between 1931 and 1933, and Ambassador of Spain in Lisbon. After the Spanish Civil War, he went into exile in Argentina and there he was History Professor at the universities of Mendoza and Buenos Aires. Moreover, he founded in Argentina the Institute of Spain's History and the magazine "Cuadernos de Historia de España." From March 1962 until February 1971, he was president of the Government of the Spanish Republic in exile. In 1976, he returned to Spain and settled down in Avila, where he died. He was buried in the cloister of the Cathedral of Ávila.
