Ríos Urruti, Fernando de los (1879-1949)

Spanish politician. Fernanda Urruti Rodríguez and José del Río Pinzón's son, a soldier living in Philippines, and Antonio Ríos Rosas' nephew, the well-known politician. His cousins were Hermenegildo, his future father-in-law, and Francisco Giner de los Ríos, founder of the Free Teaching Institution. He got married with Gloria Giner de los Ríos García, and both had one daughter, Laura.
Ríos Urruti did secondary studies at the Institute of Cordoba and graduated in Law from the University of Madrid in 1901, obtaining a PhD in Law in 1907. He furthered his studies abroad for several times. Ríos Urruti was a professor at the Free Teaching Institute. Head of department in Spanish Comparative Political Law at the University of Granada in 1911. In 1930, he passed to the University of Madrid, holding the chair in Superior Studies in Political Science and Political Law. He balanced his post as head of department with several courses and conferences at different universities and academic institutions worldwide. In 1939 he was expelled from his chair due to the Francoist Regime.
Ríos Urruti held some other positions: Member of PSOE in 1919, being elected member of the Executive Board a year later. Deputy at Courts for Granada and Madrid, in the 1919 and 1923 elections respectively. Member of the Provisional Government of the Republic. Deputy for Granada in the 1931, 1933 and 1936 Legislatures during the Second Republic. Minister of Justice, Public Instruction and Fine Arts during the Republic. Ambassador of Spain in US between 1936 and 1939. Member of the Government of the Republic in exile, in Mexico, headed by José Giral as the Minister of State, between 1945 and 1946.
