Ramón Gómez de la Serna was a Spanish writer and journalist of the Spanish avant-garde.
He is known as the inventor of the "Greguerías", comical metaphors or original and humorous puns. He is related to the 14th Generation or Noucentisme. At the beginning of his career, he founded the "Prometeo" magazine and was the pioneer of the chats at Café de Pombo. He fall in love with writer Carmen de Burgos, better known as Colombine, who he had a relationship with. Years later, he fall in love with Colombine's daughter. He went to Paris and stayed there for some time. He later moved to Buenos Aires, where he was welcome and met Luisa Sofovich, better known as "Luisita", with who he went to Spain until they came back again to Buenos Aires. In 1936, when the Spanish Civil War started and an unstable situation was present in Spain, his friends and partners split up in different sides and Gómez de la Serna voluntarily exiled to Buenos Aires with Luisita, who felt homesick. During his exile, he was in correspondence with Ortega y Gasset and Gregorio Marañón, and focused on writing. He went to Madrid, but only in special occasions and for short periods of time. He died the 12th January 1963 in Buenos Aires, and was buried in the Pantheon of Illustrious Men in Madrid at the side of Larra, who he really admired.
