Columbia Pictures is an American movie and television production company. Nowadays, Sony Pictures Entertainment (Sony) ownes the company.
It was first called CBC film Sales Corporation, founded in 1919 by Harry and Jack Cohen and Joe Brandt. They worked producing low budget movies and it did not work completely well, so they were forced to sell a part of the company. Later on, the Cohen brothers purchased Brand his part and renamed it in 1924 as Columbia Pictures Corporation. At the beginning, it especialezed in Western productions, series and action movies. The final impulse for the company came when they hired Frank Capra between 1927 and 1939, who re-established the company with the successful movie "It happened one night" (1934). With this movie, it turned from a second-class company to be among the biggest ones. Between the fourties and the fifties, it reached its maturity, growing on popularity and competing face to face with the greatest production companies in the USA with action movies, comedies, etc., such as "From here to erenity" (1953). Once Henry Cohen died in 1958, the decadence of the company started. Later on, it was first purchased by Coca-Cola and then by Sony. During this two periods, it would make many movies of many subjects.
