Charles I was King of Spain, Naples, Sicily, and Sardinia, duke of Burgundy, archduke of Austria, and Emperor of the Holy Roman Empire. He was born in Ghent (Belgium) on 24 February 1500 and died in Cuacos de Yuste (Spain) on 21 September 1558.
Son of Joanna of Castile and Philip I, paternal grandson of Maximilian I and Mary, Duchess of Burgundy (from whom he inherited the Burgundian patrimony, Austrian territories, and the right to the imperial throne), and as maternal son of the Catholic Monarchs, he inherited Castile, Navarre, the Indies, Naples, Sicily, and Aragon. On March 11, 1526 he married his cousin Isabella of Portugal (1503-1539), granddaughter of the Catholic Monarchs and sister of John III of Portugal, who, in 1525 had married the sister of Charles I, Catherine of Austria. They had three children who reached adulthood: Philip II (May 21, 1527 - September 13, 1598) (future king of Spain); Maria of Austria (June 21, 1528 - February 26, 1603), who in 1548 married her cousin that would later become Emperor Maximilian II and with whom she had fifteen children; Joanna of Austria (June 26, 1535 - September 7, 1573), who in 1552 married John Manuel, Prince of Portugal. At the same time, she had several extramarital children that were recognized, among which two can be highloghted: Margaret of Parma (1522-1586) and John of Austria (1547-1578).

Como heredero de todos sus abuelos, y primogénito, Carlos obtendrá uno de los mayores imperios del Renacimiento, siendo uno de los primeros impulsores de la idea de unificación en Europa, tomando la religión católica como el instrumento unificador.
