The National Historic Archive is created by virtue of R.D issued on the 28th March 1866 (Gazette from the 31st March, 1866) as the general public archive of the kingdom. Nowadays, it still holds its original title. Its establishment in the 19th century is influenced by three main factors: the historic erudition currents which reach their peak during this century, the far-reaching reforms implemented in the bosom of Public Administrations which influence the Spanish archival policy, and lastly the necessity to gather together and organize all the ecclesiastic documentation held within the Ministry of Finance and the Royal Academy of History after the disentailing laws’ implementation in the 19th century. Its headquarters will be based in the Royal Academy of History until the end of this century.
In 1896, the Archive moves to the Palace of Libraries and Museums. Freshly relocated and directed by Sir Vicente Vignau Ballester, appointed in September of the same year, the Archive will eventually be granted the title of the National Archive. Under the new direction it held both the original fonds from the Academy and the documents generated by the Central administration. The latter were spread across the Ministry departments, where they were inaccessible and endangered. In 1953, the fonds were brought to the modern building located in the Serrano Street in Madrid.
